The delightful villages of East and West Hanney are idyllic places to live, sitting astride the old Roman road between Oxford and Wantage in the Vale of the White Horse, the village of East Hanney, the larger of the two villages which are generally known as ‘The Hanneys’.  It is separated from its neighbour West Hanney by a few fields and the Letcombe Brook which once powered the water mills in the area, the last of which closed in 1920.  Named after the mysterious Uffington White Horse, thought to date back to the bronze-age, this stunning patchwork landscape is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. East Hanney is less than 4 miles from the market town of Wantage, where all the main amenities for modern living are almost on the doorstep.

Location

A community shop and post office serves the two Hanneys for essential needs, whilst a Waitrose supermarket is just 3 and a half miles away in Wantage. Here you will also find a good choice of traditional independent shops along with many of the high street chains, cafes, pubs and eateries and a street market every Wednesday and Saturday.

Living in East Hanney

The modern day villages are centred around traditional public houses The Black Horse and The Plough Inn, there is a village shop/post office, farm shop selling local produce, primary school, chapel, community centre and sports facilities.  The residents are informed of the extensive local community events by the village’s own website (www.thehanneys.org.uk).

Although surrounded by open countryside and seeming far from the madding crowd, it is well connected to local towns and transport links.  The A338 running through the village lines to Oxford in the north and through Wantage to the M4 motorway to the south.

Didcot Parkway station (just over 7 Miles away) is on the mainline into London Paddington (45 mins) for all destinations west by First Western trains.  Heathrow Airport is easily accessible by road or rail.  There are also a number of regular bus routes serving areas such as Wantage, Chilton, Didcot, Abingdon and Oxford.
